Formulating Ultramarine Blue for Water-Based Paints
Ultramarine Blue for Paint is one of the most straightforward inorganic pigments to disperse in water-based systems. Its low oil absorption (30–40 g/100g) and hydrophilic surface allow rapid wetting and good dispersibility with standard mixing equipment. For decorative latex paints, disperse Ultramarine Blue for Paint at 60–70% slurry concentration using a Cowles high-speed dissolver at 1,500–2,000 RPM for 20–30 minutes before let-down into the paint base.
Formulation tips for Ultramarine Blue for Paint in water-based systems: maintain pH above 7.0 (ultramarine is acid-sensitive below pH 6), use 0.3–0.5% wetting/dispersing agent by pigment weight, and avoid strongly acidic resins. Target fineness of grind <15 microns Hegman for premium decorative paints.
Solvent-Based, Alkyd, and Powder Coating Applications
In solvent-based alkyd and polyurethane systems, Ultramarine Blue for Paint requires pre-dispersion in the resin component using a high-speed dissolver followed by a three-roll mill pass for industrial-quality finishes. Typical loading levels: 1–3% for standard blue shades, up to 8% for deep blue architectural tones.
For powder coatings — where Ultramarine Blue for Paint excels due to its 400°C heat stability — dry-blend the pigment with the resin/hardener system before extrusion at 120–140°C. The pigment withstands curing at 180–200°C without any color shift. For cement renders and lime-based architectural products, only Ultramarine Blue for Paint and inorganic iron oxides provide the alkali resistance needed for permanent color in high-pH environments.
